A Party that Turned Into a Disaster

posted on 13 December 2011

While I was going to college I lived with some friends in a house near college. We had parties very often. The heating in that house was on crude oil furnace. Once during a party we filled up the furnace with too much crude oil and after some time, when the funace heated too much, the pressure in the furnace eventually caused it to expolode. Nobody was injured but the whole house - every nook and cranny - was covered with black crude dust. The furniture, all of our friends, all the food and drinks, everything was black! I'd worked in oil tank installation before but had never seen anything like it. We all went out on the street to remove the dust from our clothing. We borowed three vacum cleaners and vacumed the whole next day. when we vacumed everything we had to wash all of our clothes and all of our dishes. It tooked us about a week to get things clean. We didn't go to college because all of our clothes smelled. Our friends helped us to clean which wasn't the smartest idea because we got drunk a few times on the "pathway of cleaning" which delayed the cleaning job.

Safety Concerns While Working in a Warehouse

posted on 25 November 2011

If you work in any type of warehouse setting, safety needs to be the number one concern at all times. You need to ensure every employee wears ppe clothing and is trained in health and safety. In warehouses, heavy machinery and equipment are often used to complete daily tasks. Machines such as scissor lifts, pallet jacks, rolling doors, and automatic gates are part of hundreds workplace accidents resulting in injury every year. When using a scissor lift to gain height to reach boxes, or put something away on a high shelf, it is important to always follow the safety instructions in the machine’s manual. Its also necessary to make sure scissor lifts are properly serviced and maintained as scheduled. Most of these machines require training and certification to be able to use them. It is always important to watch for people walking by while operating warehouse equipment. Sometimes, a person walking by a scissor lift may not see that it is in motion. If you are the operator, be vigilant, cautious, and complete your task with care and consideration.

Making Our Hot Bedroom Cooler: Literally

posted on 2 November 2011

One issue that I have with my house is that our bedroom upstairs gets really hot, from late in the morning until late at night. This is why we have been planning to buy an air conditioner and have it installed there. We have already considered the ambient temperature, dimensions, heat sources, number of occupants, window and door sizes of the room and other factors that affect an air conditioner's operation. We even considered the curtain thickness on the windows - which are fastened with velcro tape. Since we have our two little kids sleeping with us, we also took note of the noise that the unit generates. We would not want to solve one problem and create another. We have also taken into account the damage being comfortably cool will have on our wallet, so getting an air conditioner that is low-maintenance, had a good EER (energy efficiency ratio), has a reliable and easy-to-reach service center, and came with standard warranty on parts and labor were part of the decision. With these in mind, we believe a three-fourth horsepower unit will do a fine job. But there are still a couple of items that we need to work on before we can get as cool as a cucumber: reviewing our electric wiring to make sure it can handle the additional load, and choosing the most suitable area of the room where we can install the air conditioner.

The Summer That Left Behind a Mess

posted on 27 June 2011

In the summer of 2010, a bunch of friends and I decided that we would rent a shore house for the summer in Manasquan, NJ. We decided we all needed a place to unwind in the summer near the beach and that if we all went in on a house as a group, we would have a great time. We were right, in fact, we had a little bit too much of a good time. The end of the summer rolled around, and it was time to clean up the mess we had made in our beach cottage. After what seemed to be hours of collecting all of the empty cups and half filled cans of beer, it was time to scrub the place down and look for additional mess that might be around the house. We weren't blessed with honda pressure washers and the like - just elbow grease! First and foremost, was the door, which had been broken off of the hinges during a late night brawl that occured between 2 liquored up roomates. We decided that the door wasn't worth fixing and we will have to pay the landlord some of our secutiry deposit. The rest of the house was absolutely filthy. Every floor was sticky, the toilets were clogged and the water had turned black. The house truly looked like a scene from a college frat house. Needlesss to say, this will be the last time that we ever rent a house together, and if on an off chance, we decide to do something like this again, we will hire a cleaning service!

Ten of The World’s Tallest Steel Buildings

posted on 10 May 2011

Large steel buildings are always a sight to behold. Bustling cities are filled with these modern structures. These skyscrapers tower over everything and seem to stretch infinitely. It’s a wonder how these giants started out as nothing but bare, unused space. These ten buildings started out the same way from the ground up. Now, they are the ten tallest of their kind in the world! The tenth tallest steel building is the US Bank Tower, followed by the New York Times’ Tower. The Chrysler building is the eighth but, at 319 meters tall, it’s as tall as The China World Trade Center III. The Minsheng Bank Building, also in China, comes in as the sixth tallest, while the John Hancock Centre is the fifth. It is a mere 2 meters shorter than the fourth tallest, which is The Centre (in China). The third tallest is the Aon Centre, while the second is the Empire State Building. Finally, the tallest steel building in the world (and the 8th tallest building, over all) is the Willis Tower in Chicago, with a height of 442 meters.

The people you are going to need when building a house

posted on 18 January 2011

When it comes to building a house, there are different people who are concerned with the building of the house. Before you build that house you are going to need land that you will put it up. You are going to need an inspector of lands that is going to inspect the land where you want to build the house on so that you can see if the place is safe for a building to be put up there. Then you are going to need someone to design the house for you. You are going to need a civil engineer and an architecture that is going to determine how the house is going to be put up. Then you are going to need constructors who are going to do the manual work of bringing the house from the ground going up. Then when the foundation has been put then you are going to need the people who are going to put the roof, ceiling and the gutters. You are going to have to get people who have been trained on the Height Safety procedures so that no one can be hurt and also so that they can do a good job on the ceiling. Then you will need people who are going to paint your house, the list is endless.
