I get so annoyed when people fawn over aesthetically pleasing designs that serve zero purpose. I'm thinking of Flash-only websites, or print designs where you can't even read the company name because the font is hard to read. Form follows function - three golden words. Every design has a purpose. No designer designs for the sake of design. If you do, then put your works in an art gallery. No, designers design for PEOPLE. People will interact with your design in some way, and you have to consider them and how they can best interact with your design. In terms of getting an understanding of what design is, a search in Google for graphic design companies london is a good place to start - look at the portfolios of the various companies out there offering graphic design services and see how they've tackled the principle of "form follows function". Never forget those words!
